Natural Remedies for Tinnitus Relief
If you’re a tinnitus sufferer, you’re not alone, it is estimated there are 50 million Americans who, just like you, are desperately looking for relief from the “ringing in the ears“. Don’t worry; there are multiple tried and tested natural remedies.
TINNITUS: The symptoms of tinnitus are most normally a ringing sound emanating from within the ear; it may affect one or both ears. The ringing sound has also been described as buzzing or humming.
To some, this ringing sound is debilitating, striking at inopportune times and making life difficult; for those a trip to your doctor is recommended. Most of us will experience tinnitus when environmental sounds are at low ebb. If you’ve noticed your symptoms decrease when taking a shower, listening to music or the sound of moving water, it’s likely a set of earphones coupled with ambient natural sounds may be of benefit.
If you’re a smoker, it’s obvious that you should quit for a variety of reason, tinnitus is simply one more. Smoking constricts the blood vessels, and this can be a cause of tinnitus. Of course we can’t offer a diagnosis, but it’s simply good common sense to quit smoking, live longer, healthier and tinnitus free.
The same advice (while not as serious) can be said for alcohol and caffeine; and while I love a good cup-of-java in the morning, if I knew I’d be hearing ringing or buzzing later in the day, I’d adjust my lifestyle.
Moderate exercise should be part of everyone’s daily regimen; not only is it the right thing to do, you’ll find you have more vitality, less stress and a more positive outlook on life. Of these, stress is a proven cause of tinnitus and should be eliminated if at all possible.
ELIMINATING STRESS: Stress is a killer, if at all possible do your best to eliminate or reduce stress in your life. Not only can it lead to high blood pressure (a known cause of tinnitus), it also can lead to heart disease and is a proven way to shorten your life span.
Some of us are fortunate enough to work in a quiet or semi quiet environment, if that’s your situation, count yourself fortunate. If your workplace is located near any type of high decibel machinery, be certain to wear ear protection; not only will it protect your hearing well into the future, it can also be a remedy for tinnitus.
While aches and pains often accompany aging, certain painkillers (aspirin in particular) has been shown to aggravate tinnitus in some patients.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS:
While everyone is “to a degree” unique in their symptoms and treatment, certain alternative methods such as acupuncture, hypnosis, magnetic therapy and hyperbaric oxygen treatment have been utilized successfully by many as an effective relief from tinnitus.
Aromatherapy, in particular the use of rosemary, cypress, lemon and rose oils have had measured, but not definitive results. Aromatherapy has proven results in the reduction of stress, for that reason alone it is worth an experimental session or two.
Herbal remedies, while not within the scope of the sciences, has proven effective for some; particularly the use of Ginkgo Biloba, Black Cohosh, Hawthorn, Melatonin. If this method appeals to you, search out local holistic healers who may be able to help with a myriad of problems.
Tinnitus does not need to be debilitating, using common sense coupled with research and a healthier lifestyle can lead you toward a quiet and restful state of being. Should none of these remedies be effective, take the time to visit with your doctor or health care professional to ensure your symptoms do not have a more serious cause.
